Welcome Fall: A Time for Tangible Change

As the leaves begin to turn and the air cools, we often hear that fall is a great time to embrace change and let go of things that have been holding us back. While this is true, it’s easy for such sayings to become just a comforting sentiment, a feel-good message that we hear and smile at before moving on with our day. But what if this idea could be more than just words? What if we could feel it deeply, in a way that resonates with our entire being?

In truth, letting go and embracing change requires more than just hearing or seeing an inspiring quote—it needs to become something we actively engage with. Often, what holds us back is the desire to maintain control, to be the ones directing the course of our lives. While there’s value in taking charge, we all know that life can sometimes feel overwhelming, no matter how much we try to steer the ship. And that’s when the real challenge arises: knowing when to relinquish control.

Fall is the perfect time to do just that—to let go of what has weighed us down. Yes, we all have burdens, and for some, they may be heavier than others. But just like the trees shedding their leaves, we can release what no longer serves us and allow the season to fill us with hope and healing.

Though I enjoy all the seasons, fall or as some say, autumn, holds a special place in my heart. It’s a time of breathtaking beauty, from the changing colors of the leaves to the fun of Halloween and the warmth of Thanksgiving. While the holidays can sometimes bring stress, especially Thanksgiving, we can use fall as a time to let go of anxiety, loneliness, or any lingering tension. In doing so, we can open ourselves up to the possibility of connection, new friendships, and a renewed sense of peace.

You’ll hear it many times: fall is the season to let go and embrace change. But how do we make this more than just a saying? How do we truly connect to it?

We can start by rereading that phrase: “Let go and embrace change.” As you do, think about the burdens, worries, and stress you’ve been carrying—whether they’re small or overwhelming. Imagine, even for a moment, what it would feel like to be free of them. How would your life change? What would it be like to be mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually lighter? It might seem impossible, but what if it weren’t? What if putting energy into this vision could make it a reality, even if not exactly how you imagine it, but in the way you need?

The key is to release control. After you’ve done all you can, let go and trust—whether in the universe, a higher power, or something else you believe in. It's about relinquishing that tight grip and allowing something greater to step in. This doesn’t mean abandoning action—prayer, intention, and active engagement are all essential, but knowing when to step back and allow things to unfold is crucial.

Now, I’d like to share an exercise that can help with letting go. My therapist introduced me to it, and it’s been incredibly effective for me (yes, I have a therapist! Life has thrown me a few curveballs, so much so that sometimes I am striking out in my own personal baseball game, but good comes from them too, but I’ll save those stories for another time 😉).

Shake Off the Old with This Exercise:

  1. Breathe: Take a deep breath and exhale fully through your mouth. Do this three times.

  2. Move: Stretch your arms and legs while sitting. Open and close your hands, rotate your feet, and if you’re able, stand up and gently sway for about 30 seconds.

  3. Hug Yourself: While hugging yourself, tap gently on both shoulders and repeat the following three times:

    • I am safe.

    • I am loved.

    • I deserve the best outcomes for me.

Now that you’re feeling more connected, it’s time for some creative fun!

Visualization Exercise:

Imagine a container—a bag, a box, a chest—whatever you like. Give it as much detail as

possible. What color is it? What material is it made of? Does it have any decorations, if so what colors? If it’s a bag, how does it close? If it’s a chest, does it have a lock? This detail strengthens your brain’s connection to the visualization, making the process more tangible.

Once you’ve created your container in your mind, see each of your worries, stresses, and burdens. Pick one up and place it in the container. Do this with all your concerns. Once everything is inside, close the container securely.

Now, visualize someone or something you trust—whether it’s the universe, an angel, a loved one in spirit, or higher power. Share with them how you’re feeling. If you’re struggling, let them know. Ask for help with what’s in your container and trust them to carry it for you. Know that you can revisit the container anytime, but for now, they’ve got it, and they’re here to help you.

This exercise is not just about letting go in the moment but about creating space for healing, guidance, and new possibilities. Practice this regularly, and over time, you’ll begin to feel lighter, more open, and more at peace.

Fall is not only a season of letting go but also one of embracing the help that comes when we allow it. It can be humbling to ask for assistance, but it’s also a sign of great strength. You may be surprised by where that help comes from.

Now, you’re ready to fully embrace the beauty and renewal that Fall offers!

Happy Fall!
